Maternal-fetal medicine faculty
The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Geisinger is a strong fellowship and the ideal environment for learning. Fellows are well-respected by MFM and OB/GYN attending physicians. The faculty are all warm, welcoming and actively engaged in fellow education. We have support for research within our department through mentorship with our experienced faculty and the Henry Hood Center for Health Research, as well as protected research time to complete our projects. Clinical duties emphasize learning over service with opportunities for learning during clinical hours as well as through structured fellow lectures. Working closely with attending physicians, genetic counselors, nurse practitioners, residents and medical students, we approach our patients as a team with many collaborative opportunities with our colleagues in other medical specialties to provide patient-centered care and education. We are exposed to a wide variety of pathology as a tertiary care center and are also given opportunities to practice in various geographic locations during our training, exposing us patients from a wide variety of social and ethnic backgrounds. Fellows are provided ample opportunity to master ultrasonography under the guidance of our experienced ultrasonographers. Danville may be a small town with all the perks of country living, but is also only a three-hour drive from major cities like NYC, Philadelphia and Baltimore. I have nothing but good things to say about this fellowship and my experience here over the past two years.
When applying for a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship, I interviewed at several institutions, including many top-notch programs, and found Geisinger's program to match, if not be superior, to their level of training. After spending almost one year here, I can attest this program has the clinical experience, practical training and research support that is superior to any program in the country. The attendings come from various programs and have diverse experience, which is essential in training. The attendings and fellows have a collegial relationship and the trust/respect is resonated when interacting with other departments. The attending and ancillary staff are dedicated and supportive to fellow education. This program is a hidden treasure and I would recommend it without any hesitation.

I was attracted to Geisinger’s program for a variety of reasons. First, the research program here is very strong and we receive guidance from many faculty research advisors, biostatisticians, data analysts and project managers. Second, we have an in-patient service rotation that uniquely triages pregnant women with high-complexity medical issues to fellows while patients with lower medical complexity are seen by non-fellow healthcare providers. This triaging tremendously increases the number of MFM learning opportunities for fellows. Third, as a fellow, you have regular exposure to fetal cardiology conferences that help you gain comfort with various fetal cardiovascular conditions.
When I was applying for a fellowship, I was looking for a program where attending physicians enjoyed teaching and there was plenty of pathology. In addition to both of those, our program also has strong ultrasound and genetic counseling teams. Most importantly, I’m very happy to be a part of a division that became a second family for me.
