Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency

Expand your infectious diseases clinical skills and make a lasting impact on patients’ lives. An infectious diseases pharmacy residency at Geisinger will show you how.

About us

The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency at Geisinger Medical Center builds upon the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 training, preparing pharmacists to become clinical experts in infectious diseases. Our mission is to provide immersive learning experiences across a wide spectrum of adult and pediatric infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship program management and health system leadership, empowering graduates to advance the field and improve patient outcomes.

Geisinger Medical Center is a 550-bed academic medical center and integrated care delivery system serving as a referral hub across a large rural and semi-urban geographic region. Our program offers a unique blend of high-acuity care and long-term patient continuity, giving residents the opportunity to care for patients with common and complex infectious diseases. Residents engage directly with patients and providers through the Ryan White HIV Clinic, inpatient primary and specialty care teams, and the outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) program, among others, guaranteeing diverse, meaningful clinical experiences.

Our teaching philosophy emphasizes growth through challenge. Residents are supported while being encouraged to stretch beyond their comfort zones, to take ownership of patient care and to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of infectious diseases pharmacy. Success is measured not by checking boxes, but by making a lasting impact.

The program is supported by a robust faculty of board certified pharmacists who are active in multidisciplinary committees, research and year-round precepting. Residents collaborate closely with infectious diseases physicians, microbiologists, infection preventionists, nurses and pharmacists across specialties, fostering a rich interdisciplinary learning environment.

Geisinger maintains strong affiliations with over a dozen pharmacy schools, offering residents extensive teaching and precepting opportunities. Rotations include clinical infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, microbiology, bone marrow transplant, critical care medicine, pediatric infectious diseases, hepatology, OPAT, HIV care, travel medicine and more.

Graduates of our program are well prepared for advanced clinical roles, academic positions and board certification, equipped with the skills and vision to lead the future of infectious diseases pharmacy.
