What is behavioral health?
Behavioral health focuses on emotions and behaviors related to your mental health and well-being to help with everything from handling stress at work to managing a loss or alcohol misuse.
Our behavioral health team can help you take control of a mental illness, substance misuse or serious psychosocial stressors and treat numerous mental health conditions, including:
- Alcohol misuse
- Anxiety
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Bipolar disorder
- Depression
- Eating disorders
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Opioid misuse
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Your behavioral health care team
Get coordination of your care and help through your journey from your behavioral health team. You’ll work with:
- BH case managers: These master’s-level clinicians provide case management services for members with behavioral health needs in the communities in which they live and receive healthcare.
- Caseworkers: These bachelor’s-level clinicians engage members presenting as high risk and/or with serious mental illness in the ER, hospital and community.
- Addiction coordinators: These bachelor’s-level clinicians work directly with members with an active or newly diagnosed substance use disorder.
- Certified recovery specialists: These staff have lived experience and support, guide and connect members to resources, wherever they are in their substance use recovery journey.
- Certified peer specialists: These staff have lived experience and support, guide and connect members to resources, wherever they are in their mental health recovery journey.
- BH care connectors: These bachelor’s-level clinicians manage our BH Call Center. The team reviews BH eligibility and claims; coordinates referrals, care and resources; and helps with de-escalation of members with BH needs.
- Utilization management team: This team completes authorization reviews and concurrent reviews. Working with medical directors, they make sure behavioral health authorizations are completed according to your benefit coverage.
Behavioral health FAQs
Do I need an authorization for services?
Routine outpatient in-network services do not require prior authorization. However, if your provider is performing any kind of testing, that may require an authorization. Talk to them about sending an authorization form.
Call 888-839-7972 if you have any questions or concerns. If a service is performed without authorization, you’re responsible for the cost.
I called about my child's bill that I received, and no one will give me information. Why is that?
The age of consent for behavioral health is 14. Due to HIPAA, Geisinger is unable to discuss a member’s information without their permission/authorized representative form.
