CyberKnife non-invasive cancer treatment

For the hardest-to-treat tumors, CyberKnife gives you options.

What is CyberKnife?

Despite its name, CyberKnife® radiation treatment isn’t a knife at all. This robotic, non-invasive therapy targets complex tumors — cancerous and non-cancerous — by delivering precise doses of radiation, anywhere in the body.

CyberKnife is designed to treat tumors that tend to move throughout the course of a treatment session, such as in the lungs when you breathe. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, CyberKnife aligns the beam of radiation to the specific area around the tumor, while protecting the healthy surrounding tissue.

So you have quicker treatments, less pain and faster recovery.

What conditions does CyberKnife treat?

Cancer isn’t one-size-fits-all — that’s why we’ll work with you to find the treatment that’s best for you.

For complex cancers or tumors that are hard to reach, surgery may not always be an option. CyberKnife is a non-surgical treatment that targets complex tumors anywhere in the body, including:

CyberKnife is also used to treat non-cancerous tumors.

Before beginning CyberKnife treatment, you’ll have imaging tests to pinpoint the exact size and location of your tumor. This helps us create a treatment plan that includes a specific dose of radiation based on the type of tumor you have.

How does CyberKnife work?

Once your team determines that CyberKnife is right for you, you’ll have a consultation.

Before beginning CyberKnife treatment, you’ll have imaging tests to pinpoint the exact size and location of your tumor. This helps us create a treatment plan that includes a specific dose of radiation based on the type of tumor you have.

CyberKnife treatment typically requires fewer treatments than traditional radiation therapy — for example, five CyberKnife sessions versus 40 traditional sessions for prostate cancer. The average session lasts less than an hour. During your session, you can listen to music or watch TV to help you relax as you lie comfortably.

Most CyberKnife treatment sessions are completed in one to five appointments, typically over the course of seven to 10 days. The number of sessions you need will depend on the type, location, stage and size of your tumor.

After your treatments are complete, you’ll have follow-up appointments with your radiation oncologist and your cancer team. During these appointments, your team will evaluate whether the treatments have worked and how your tumor has responded.
